As clearly described in the Lotus Sutra Tathagata Life Span: The lotus held by the Buddha symbolizes the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha himself. The lotus flower is born in the mud, but it is whirling and uncontaminated, full of beauty. The Buddha’s wisdom is like a lotus, pure and untainted. It can maintain the brightness of wisdom in the complicated world and not be troubled by the burdens of the world.
The petals of the lotus open gradually, symbolizing the gradual unfolding of the wisdom of the Buddha. The teachings of the Buddha, like the lotus flower, gradually unfold its wisdom and impart the Dharma to the world. The delicate texture and delicate structure of the lotus express the Buddha’s extremely detailed understanding and transmission of the Dharma.
The lotus flower provides shelter to insects and symbolizes the compassionate embrace of the Buddha. The Buddha’s wisdom and compassion complement each other. It is precisely because the Buddha possesses the dual qualities of wisdom and compassion that he can save all sentient beings and lead them to the road to liberation.
The image of the Buddha holding a lotus is also to convey an important message to believers: everyone has the potential of Buddha nature within them and has the possibility of becoming a Buddha.
Just like a lotus flower growing in mud, even if we live in a complicated world, we can gradually develop our inner potential and reach the state of enlightenment and liberation through spiritual practice and Buddhist teachings.
When we see the image of the Buddha holding a lotus in his hand, we should think about the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha. We should also encourage ourselves to learn from the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha, discover our inner Buddha nature, and move towards the inner pure land.
