Very serious karma. Received retribution very lightly
This is an example of a very serious karmic crime but a very light retribution.
“Fa Yuan Zhu Lin” says: “However, the karma created may be light or heavy. If it is a light karma, it will be destroyed if it is repented of. If it is a heavy karma, there are things that can be changed, and the heavy karma can also be changed. It is called the three paths of karma. It is easy for people to suffer easily.” Each of us Buddhist practitioners has done a lot of bad karma before learning Buddhism, and unknowingly planted the seeds of evil. Therefore, when studying Buddhism, especially when diligently observing the precepts and practicing, various adversities will arise.
The arrival of many adversities is not a bad thing. Some of them are here to help us settle our karma. Serious crimes are reported lightly. “The Biography of Master Tripitaka of Daci’en Temple” records that Master Xuanzang was also ill before his death. The protector comforted him and said: “Master Wu All the bad karma that has harmed and upset sentient beings in the past has been eliminated, so we should be happy and happy.” Just as it is said in the “Diamond Sutra”, it is not a bad thing to read the sutra but be looked down upon by others. The heavy sins of the lower realms were repaid in the form of humiliation.
There is a layman who is called Lao Hu. Before he learned Buddhism, he had a heavy karma of killing. It is said that when he was a chef, he was a famous sharp knifeman. No matter how difficult it was to chop bones and meat, he could easily chop it with a few chops. question. Lao Hu smoked, drank, and ate meat almost every day. At that time, he thought that practicing Buddhism was superstitious.
Perhaps due to his good roots in previous lives, by chance, he met Lay Buddhist Guoqing, the author of “Modern Cause and Effect Record”. After receiving instructions from Teacher Guoqing, he made up his mind to stop smoking, drinking, and eating meat, and began to eat a vegetarian diet. , it can be said that “you will believe it once you hear it”. Such a huge change made my wife, who has been studying Buddhism for many years, excited for several days.
In October 2007, Lao Hu accompanied a friend on a pilgrimage to Mount Putuo to worship Buddha. On the first day, the two of them worshiped Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva sincerely. They worshiped Tathagata in temples along the way and worshiped Buddha in temples. Everything went well.
The next day, in the hotel at night, when I was stepping out of the bathtub after taking a shower, I accidentally slipped and fell. I heard a “bang” sound and knelt on the ground with my right knee. I immediately realized that my right kneecap had been shattered. , so he asked his companions to rush him to the hospital for treatment.
The local doctor diagnosed the patient with a “comminuted fracture of the right kneecap”. On the third day, he was transferred to a hospital in Shanghai and decided to perform surgery immediately. From the time he fell and fractured his knee until the operation, although Lao Hu’s knee was swollen, he never felt any pain. He also believed that this was the blessing of the Buddha, which repaid the pain lightly and repaid the pain lightly, so he never stopped mentioning the Buddha’s name.
On the night after the operation, my right knee hurt all night due to the postoperative reaction. After that, I never had pain again and recovered very quickly. Several young people in the same ward have been treated and recuperated for five or six months after fractures, and they often “tonic” (drinking bone soup and eating meat and fish to supplement the so-called “nutrition”). However, the wounds have not healed yet, and they often The pain was unbearable, no wonder they could only feel inferior in front of this 60-year-old uncle.
It can be seen that eating a vegetarian diet and practicing Buddhism can bring great help to the recovery of diseases. After being discharged from the hospital, Lao Hu became more diligent in studying Buddhism. At first, his knees were in the recovery stage after surgery and he could not kneel in front of the Buddha statue. He sat on the bed and confessed the many killings and other bad karma he had committed when he was a chef, and read and recited the Ksitigarbha Sutra. He dedicates his life to the sentient beings he has harmed, hoping that they will soon be freed from suffering and achieve happiness.
Two months after the operation, Lao Hu broke the medical routine and could get out of bed and walk around the house without the help of crutches. Soon, the somewhat impatient Brother Hu was no longer willing to stay at home and often went out to participate in gatherings of Buddhist friends and activities such as releasing animals. At first, we Buddhist friends were a little worried and advised him to take it easy and rest at home for a while before coming out.
Unexpectedly, Lao Hu, who has a bold personality, not only “didn’t listen”, but also said, “It doesn’t matter, the knee has recovered, and walking will not be affected at all now.” He raised his legs and walked to perform for us, which attracted everyone’s laughter. It is now 7 months after the fracture. There is no sign of fracture in his right knee and he can move as freely as a normal person.
Today, Lao Hu has a very good mentality. He understands that this matter is due to his karma, and that serious crimes should be punished lightly. If he had not become a vegetarian and practiced Buddhism, he would not have had the consequences to be punished! Therefore, practice becomes more diligent. At the same time, he also spoke from his own experience, urging people around him to become vegetarians, learn Buddhism, and believe deeply in cause and effect.
